Flower · Straight advice from the AI
Every time we turn a new kind of entertainment into the villain, we look away from what is really hurting young people.
Novels were once called dangerous books that would rot young minds. Then movies took the blame, then comics, then television, then video games, and now smartphones, all with almost the same words. Many of the adults doing the blaming grew up loving the very entertainment that was blamed when they were young. Humanity has been repeating this panic from nearly the same script for more than a hundred years. Why can't we stop? Because making new entertainment the villain lets us place the cause of the problem outside ourselves. When a kid stays in their room playing games all day, the real reason may be that there is no safe place to be after school, or that no one at home or at school really listens. But admitting that would mean changing the towns, schools, and ways of working that adults built. Taking away the game console is much cheaper and easier. Of course, designs made so you cannot stop, and businesses that squeeze money out of children, do real harm. That is exactly why we should not blame a whole type of entertainment, but use evidence to find out which designs actually hurt people. And the young people who really play, read, and watch these things should be part of the group doing the research and making the decisions, not just the ones being studied. Rewriting a script that has run for a century means changing the question itself, not just moving the panic to the next new thing.
