Flower · Straight advice from the AI
Every time we say that honest people have nothing to hide, we help build the machinery that watches us all.
If you are not doing anything wrong, why would you mind being watched? This line shows up every time more cameras go up or more records of our messages are collected, and most people nod along. But there is a big hole in it. The people doing the watching are the ones who decide what counts as wrong. History is full of times when words or gatherings that were allowed yesterday became suspicious the next day. Collected records do not disappear, and when the people in charge change, so does the way the records are used. We still nod because we assume the one being watched will be some suspicious stranger, never us. We want our own secrets kept safe, yet we feel comforted by systems that watch other people. We check a child's location on a map, or quietly scroll through the posts of someone we are curious about. Out of these small comforts, a system that watches the whole of society keeps growing. What we need is to swap the question. Instead of asking whether we have anything to hide, we should ask who is watching the watchers. There should be rules that force those who collect information to explain what they collect, when they delete it, and who checks on them. Safety should be measured not by how much power to watch exists, but by how strongly that power is held in check.
